CABIRA - 72 BC
Main Battle

Pontic vs Roman

Historical Background
Artemidorus guided the Roman army down through mountain paths avoiding the plain to a point which overlooked Cabira giving easy access to the enemy if Lucullus wanted to fight but a stream to its front to shelter behind if he didn’t.
Mithridates strategy was to cut the Romans off from their supplies which came from Cappadocia he sent his cavalry under Menander to attack a Roman grain convoy. The Pontic commander failed to wait until the Romans had reached open country and attacked them in a narrow defile. The rout of the Pontic horse resulted in Mithridates attempting to withdraw which was spotted by the Roman commander Lucullus and he ordered a general advance his victory was total.
Mithridates was only saved from capture as the Roman troops pursuing him stopped to loot the royal treasury
