My first CCA experience: some basic questions 1 Year, 7 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi All,
I just purchased my first basic set of CCA, past all the stickers, read the rules a couple of times and I now started with a first game (just me playing both sides ) to figure some things out.
now my first questions:
- when playing a command card, you 'advance' troops in a certain section. Is this movement always forward, or can you 'advance' some troops by sending them back to your side of the gameboard (as a way of retreat- same question for movements sideways). Pretty basic isn't it

- rolling a flag in a combat means the enemy-unit needs to pull back and not your own attacking force, yes? just verifying...

- I read a lot about adjacent units and holding troops connected. What's the importance of this in the game? And does adjacent means a hex direct connected to ONE unit, or does it means the group of all troops connected to one another by occupied hexes?

thanks for this vivid community, a joy to see!

Hi DubWarrior,
first of all I would like to welcome in this great CCAncients community.

Here are my answers:
1) when ordering your troops (with command cards) you are free to move wherever you like: forward, backward or sideway (or a combination of them).
2) You are right! A flag causes retreat for opposing unsopported unit (not your own).
3) A unit has to be considered "supported" when 2 friendly units stand in hexes linked to itself.

Considering unit in "line formation"... A-B-C-D-E-F
Units A and F are unsupported.
Units form B to E are supported.

Hexes are considered linked also in different "formation" than "line".
Also here units A is supported (with 2 friendly units on his back)
.A.
B.C

Hope this looks clear.

Another good reason to keep units linked is to maximise Leadership and Line command cards.

Owkay, I did a first game with 2 players
Few things to ask:

- My leader was on the egde of the board on my side. The enemy killed the four units to which my leader was attached. So he trew a dice to hit my leader. He survived so i pulled him of the board (because my leader was standing alone after an attack I was forced to evade, yes?) we didn't find the answer if the other player had to recieve a victory block (he killed the unit, but my leader escaped).

-evade: we had a bit the impression we were jelling EVADE all the time when attacked in a close combat. You can always evade (and only be hit when the enemy trows a dice with the same icon on it as the attacked unit) except for some cavalary units, yes?

- when i moved my archers I could only trow 1 dice for a range combat. But when I move my archers into a close combat they become stronger since I can trow 2 dices, right? Looked a bit strange to me as my archers looked pretty weak in a long range combat?

That's it for now
thanks in advance!

As you can see here inside LEADER FAQ ...
A leader on his baseline hex that must evade is removed from the battlefield. Your opponent does not gain a Victory Banner when a leader evades from the battlefield. A leader's evade will turn into an escape, when the leader's evade path is occupied by enemy units or leaders.
Your opponent will get 1 VP for killing unit and NO VP for the leader (that survived the attack and managed to evade/escape).

-evade: we had a bit the impression we were jelling EVADE all the time when attacked in a close combat. You can always evade (and only be hit when the enemy trows a dice with the same icon on it as the attacked unit) except for some cavalary units, yes?
Don't forget that the following units may Evade:
  • Green circled units (light infantry, light sling infantry, light bow infantry, light cavalry, light bow cavalry, light chariot) may always Evade.

  • War machine units may always evade.

  • A leader must Evade if he is alone in a hex (see Leader Evade).

  • Medium cavalry and camel units may Evade all foot and heavy mounted units.

  • Heavy cavalry and heavy chariot units may Evade all foot and elephant units.

  • Auxilia, medium infantry, warrior, heavy infantry and elephant units may never Evade.

See complete evasion rule HERE.

The difference is that when in Close Combat your archers will suffer Battle Back, while after a Ranged Combat your opponent cannot Battle Back.
You are allowed to fire from range with 2 dice only if your unit stands (no movement, only fire).
