Slings & Arrows... 2 Years, 6 Months ago Karma: 0
It just doesn't seem right to me that there is no distinction at all between Slingers and Light Bow...am I missing something?

Shouldn't there be some sort of difference between the two? It would seem that the rate of fire might be one, and could be reflected.

Thoughts?

I think the original intention was to represent the prevalence of a certain range unit in a culture. Like in the original game, the Romans has more archers and the Carthaginians has more slings.

And yes I agree there should be some distinction to make it more sensible. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi, everybody!
Coincidentally, I was thinking about possible distinction between these two unit types recently.
And I came to next variant:
1. Rules for light bow infantry should be leaved unchanged: range 3 hexes, roll two dices when stay, one dice when moved.
2. Rules for light sling infantry may be changed this way: range 2 hexes, roll two dices no matter what unit did: stood or moved.
In this variant slingers have shorter range but don't have penalty for movement.
Just remember how slingers were depicted in Alexandr movie, fast and shooting on move.
Maybe it make the sense, what do you think?

Seleucus and liebenasuka, I agree with your thoughts.

This was my suggestion also, that slingers could fire on the move, due to the natural motion of a sling (seemingly, of course, as I have never used one) vs. the stationary, volley fire that bowmen utilized.

Speaking of volley fire, wouldn't it have been easier to coordinate the firing of bows, vs. slings, in ancient times? It would seem to me that an officer could order a volley of arrows, due to the stationary mechanics of the drawn and ready bow vs. the "windup time" and constant motion of the sling.

I have taken a look at what the internet has to say about range, and although there are some ancient accounts that state elite slingers could outrange the archers of the day, I find this hard to believe, due to the fact that at such a distance, the power would be seem to be greatly reduced.

I like the range vs. mobile-fire tradeoff, it seems to make sense to me.

Of course, there could be elite/special sling units that have a range of three.

I think one of the principles behind CC Ancients is the simplicity of the rules and they represent general trends of a battle rather than blow by blow recreation.

Therefore I'm happy with these rules as they stand.

Anyway if different ranks of slingers fired at different times (like musketmen of a later age) they would be able to maintain a constant rate.

You must not forget that the bow has been considerably enhanced during the last 2000 years. The longbpw of the middle ages is superior to the one used during antiquity, as the reflex bow of Huns, and then the one used by Magyar (a sort of long reflex bow).
