Expansions 4 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
Hi in two weeks time I shall order the base game but am a bit concerned that expansion 1 is out of print and expansion 4 and 6 seem to be the only ones available. I see expansions 2 and 3 are currently going through P500

My question is how likely is it that expansion 1 will be reprinted and if it's not likley to be for a long time what are the suggestions for the inevitable compromises. If I buy expansion 6 for example is it possible to use the Spartan Army as Macedonians with the barbarians from the base game as the eastern armies. Or if I want 2 roman armies could I use the grey army from the base game with the purple army from expansion 4.

I realise it will be 1 - 2 years before the combined expansions 2 and 3 will take place and so in the mean time for those like myself who are new to the system (Well I have memoir 44 and have just invested in Napoleonics) are there any guidelines as to how things could be replaced from expansions 4 and 6.

I think the reality is that you will need to mix blocks to expand the number of scenarios and armies you can play. This is already the case with most EPIC scenarios. As long as the unit type is clear you should be OK. I always apply casualties to the 'substitute' blocks first.

However I haven't cross-referenced the unit type requirements against the scenarios in the expansions. You get enough Spartan blocks for 3 x LI, 1 x LB, 2 x LS, 4 x A, 1 x W, 6 x MI, 7 x Medium Hoplite, 4 x HI, 2 x LC, 3 x MC units, 3 x Leaders and 7 x Spartan Medium Hoplite with 5 blocks. In addition you get light blue Greek blocks for 2 x LI, 1 x LS, 1 x A, 9 x Medium Hoplite and 1 x Silver Shields HI. The Hoplite units can be used as normal MI. Finally you get 2 x W and 1 x LB for the Eastern Empires.

When I discovered C&C: Ancients last year I quickly bought all the expansions as I loved the game. I got the Barbarians on e-bay in the UK - very high price but off-set by other wargaming sales. I did the same with Memoir a couple of years earlier. The whole C&C system is very popular!

You could use the grey roman blocks from the base game with the purple army from expansion 4, but you'll have to check the number of each type needed for each scenario. Barbarian armies use a lot of Warrior and Auxillia units, so not sure if the Cathaginian army from the base game will cover all units. I think expansion 4 also comes with a few additional units for Barbarians and Eastern Empires.

The look of the armies won't spoil the enjoyment!

My advice would be to buy expansions 4 & 6 which, along with the base game and scenarios on this site, will keep you entertained until reprints or further expansions become available.

Yes thanks I did a quick reccie with the aid of this site of what units came with what expansions and I think Base Game plus 4 and 6 should give me more than enough to keep me occupied the only weak point as you say are the Barbarians but frankly that period doesn't interest me that much anyway.

EXPANSION ONE can still be had. try 'fair price games' or 'time well spent'. I do believe they have a few copies on the shelf. It really is a must have, as is everything else. but for some reason, cant put a finger on it, I dont have an interest in buying the epic expansion. Love the purple romans, now if I could only get my tentacles on numbers 2/3 I would be a happy happy guy.

US ARMY retired, play this game just about exclusively beyond anything else. this is the best wargame ever designed, or will ever be designed. my overwrought opinion only. but I do love this game system. looking for F to F players, will travel to smaller regional cons in Ky,Oh,In.
